How many messages can I send as a free member?

As a free member, you have a fixed number of messages you can send per conversation. This number depends on how complete your profile is:

  • 2 messages if your photo has been approved
  • 4 messages if your profile is 70% or more complete
  • 6 messages if your profile is 80% or more complete and you have completed the lifestyle questionnaire

The limit applies per conversation, even if the other person is Premium, and does not reset weekly. You can start new conversations without limit.

You can get more messages in the same conversation by:

  1. completing your profile to 70% or 80% plus the lifestyle questionnaire
  2. upgrading to Premium (which gives you unlimited messaging)
  3. waiting for the Premium conversation partner to unlock the conversation using an unlock credit, which applies until Monday 00:00

What warnings do I see when I'm approaching my messaging limit?

As a free member, you'll see a number of signals in the chat:

  • After your 2nd message: a purple tip explaining that free members have a limited number of messages per conversation.
  • If your profile is still under 70%: after 2 messages, an orange notice encouraging you to complete your profile to 70% for 2 extra messages.
  • If you have no messages left: a red notice, "Message limit reached", with the buttons "Complete profile" and/or "Upgrade to Premium".

You won't see an exact counter or progress bar; this is a deliberate choice to prevent misuse. Premium members and unlocked conversations don't receive any of these warnings.

How do I send a message or reply to someone?

To start a new conversation:

  1. Go to the member's profile (via Search, your dashboard or your matches).
  2. Click or tap "Send message".
  3. Type your message.
  4. Click Send.

To reply to an existing conversation:

  1. Go to Messages in the navigation bar (on mobile, the chat icon at the top).
  2. Open the conversation.
  3. Type your message at the bottom.
  4. Send it using the button or by pressing Enter.

To send messages, your email address must be verified and you must have at least one approved photo.

I can't send my message, even though I meet all the requirements

There can be several reasons why sending doesn't work:

  • Refresh the page (Ctrl+F5) or log in again.
  • Try a different browser or a private window.
  • The other person may have blocked you; try a different conversation.
  • Your message contains contact details or a link and is being blocked by the filter.
  • You have a temporary sending pause after repeated attempts to share contact details.
  • You've already sent five messages in a row without a reply from the other person.
  • You sent the same opening message to too many members.
  • A temporary restriction applies to your account.

Why can't I keep writing after five messages without a reply?

If you've sent five messages in a row in a conversation without the other person replying, you won't be able to write again in that conversation until they respond. You'll see the notice: "You've already sent [name] five messages without a reply. Please give them some time."

This applies to everyone, including Premium members, and is separate from the free member messaging limit. It isn't a penalty: you can still send messages in other conversations, and as soon as this person replies, you'll be able to message them again too.

This rule exists because sending many messages in a row without a reply rarely works and can put pressure on the recipient. One personal message referring to something in their profile usually works better than several short messages.

Why is my standard opening message being rejected?

If you send the same opening message to more than five different members within 24 hours, it will be blocked. This also applies to Premium members.

A personal message tailored to each member will be sent without issue, as will the icebreakers offered by 50dating.com itself and short greetings.

The reason: copy-and-paste messages rarely get a response and can feel like spam to the recipient. It's better to refer to something in the other person's profile, as this will make your message stand out more.

Why is my message being blocked, and when am I allowed to share contact details?

All messages are automatically scanned. The following are blocked:

  • Phone numbers and email addresses, even if disguised (such as "oh-one-oh" or "at symbol")
  • References to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat
  • External links
  • Requests for money

No staff members read your messages; this is an automated filter to protect against fraud.

When you are allowed to share contact details:

  • Free member to anyone: not allowed, except in an unlocked conversation for as long as the unlock lasts.
  • Premium Basic to free member: not allowed, unless the conversation has been unlocked.
  • Premium Basic to Premium: allowed.
  • Premium Plus to free member: only after unlocking.
  • Premium Plus to Premium: allowed.

The basic rule: it's allowed once both members are Premium, or if the conversation has been unlocked with an unlock credit. It is never allowed in profile text.

If you're a free member and repeatedly attempt to share contact details, you'll receive a temporary sending pause: after 5 attempts within 24 hours, this lasts 15 minutes; after 10 attempts, 60 minutes.

Do you believe your message was blocked incorrectly? Please send a screenshot via the contact form.

Why am I not getting a reply to my messages?

Messages are always delivered. As a Premium member, you can see this via the tick marks: 1 grey tick means delivered, 2 ticks means read.

Reasons why you may not get a reply:

  • The other person is a free member and has reached the messaging limit for this conversation. A Premium member can then unlock the conversation.
  • The other person is no longer active.
  • The other person hasn't read your message yet.
  • The other person isn't interested (yet).

Patience is part of online dating.

Can I delete a conversation?

You cannot delete entire conversations, but you can hide them:

  1. Go to Messages.
  2. Click the three dots (⋯) to the right of the conversation.
  3. Select Hide.

To find a hidden conversation:

  1. Go to Messages.
  2. Click Filter.
  3. Select Hidden conversations.
  4. Click "Make visible" via the three dots to restore it.

How do I delete an individual message?

Open the conversation and click or tap on your own message. You can choose from:

  • Delete for me: always possible, but the other person will still see the message.
  • Delete for everyone: only possible for your own messages and only within 24 hours of sending. Both sides will then see "This message has been deleted".

After 24 hours, you can only delete a message for yourself.

What does the clock icon and the labels Short, Medium, Long and Question mean in my message overview?

In the message overview, you'll see the last message for each conversation, with "You:" shown before it if you sent it last.

Below this is a clock icon with the date and time of the last message, for example 23-09 17:04. This is simply a timestamp, not a timer or read receipt.

If the last message was from the other person, you'll also see a length label:

  • Short (fewer than 50 characters)
  • Medium (50 to 200 characters)
  • Long (200 characters or more)

If the message contains a question, you'll also see the label Question . These labels are purely informational: they help you decide which conversation to reply to first, but have no effect on your messaging limit or visibility.

What does the coloured dot on a profile mean?

The dot on a profile shows when someone was last online:

  • Green: online now (5 minutes ago or less)
  • Yellow: recently online (5 to 60 minutes ago)
  • Light grey: online today
  • Dark grey: online this week
  • Grey: more than 7 days ago

The dot says nothing about message status, only about online activity. You can only hide your own online status with an active Incognito pass; there is no separate setting for this.

Can I send images in the chat?

Yes, you can send images in a conversation. This is possible for the file types JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP, with a maximum size of 10 MB per image. Images you send are also subject to 50dating.com's moderation rules.

Can I reply to a message via the email notification I receive?

Email notifications about new messages include a button. Clicking it confirms your identity, logs you in directly, and takes you straight to the conversation.

Please note: replying directly to the email itself will not reach the other member. Always reply to messages directly in the chat on 50dating.com.
